The Rock Shag is a dark, medium-sized cormorant found along the rocky coasts of southern South America. It is known for its preference for exposed coastal habitats and its lack of obvious crests or plumes outside of breeding season.

Found along the coasts of southern South America, including Chile, Argentina, and the Falkland Islands. Inhabits rocky coasts and offshore islands.
How to spot
Look for its entirely glossy black plumage, relatively slender bill, and absence of prominent crests. Often seen perched on rocks or diving in turbulent coastal waters. Distinguished from other southern shags by its uniform dark appearance.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its coastal range. Breeding typically occurs during the austral spring and summer.
This species nests in often inaccessible colonies on cliffs and rocky outcrops, showcasing its adaptation to rugged coastal environments.
