How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, accelerating trill or series of hoots. Look for its small size, mottled brown plumage, and prominent ear tufts. Nocturnal spotlighting in forested areas.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. Most vocal from dusk until midnight.
This owl is an excellent example of adaptive radiation, with different populations on Madagascar showing variations in plumage and calls depending on their specific microhabitats.
