Spotted
The Eurasian Pygmy Owl is the smallest owl in Europe, a tiny yet fierce predator of dense coniferous forests. It is largely crepuscular and diurnal, and surprisingly bold for its diminutive size.
Where to spot
Dense coniferous and mixed forests in mountainous or hilly regions across Northern and Central Europe, and parts of Asia.
How to spot
Listen for its soft, repetitive hooting call, which can carry surprisingly far. If spotted, note its tiny size, short tail, and bright yellow eyes. It often perches openly on treetops or snags. Look for small birds mobbing it, as this can indicate its presence.
When to spot
Active during the day, especially at dawn and dusk. Most easily located by its distinctive hooting call during the breeding season (late winter to spring).

Despite its diminutive size, the Eurasian Pygmy Owl is a formidable hunter, capable of preying on birds much larger than itself, including thrushes and even woodpeckers.
