The Mentawai Scops Owl is a small, critically endangered owl endemic to the Mentawai Islands off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. It is a highly localized forest resident.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Mentawai Islands (Siberut, Sipora, North Pagai, South Pagai) off Sumatra, Indonesia. Inhabits lowland and montane forests.
How to spot
Extremely difficult to observe due to its rarity and restricted island habitat. Identification relies on its characteristic scops owl features and its very precise geographic range. Listening for calls at night in appropriate forest habitat is the most likely method.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal.
This owl's survival is heavily threatened by rapid deforestation on the Mentawai Islands, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts in its restricted habitat.
