The Rufous-backed Pygmy Owl is a small, diurnal owl found in the humid montane forests of the Andes. Its distinct rufous back gives it its common name.
Where to spot
Humid montane forests and cloud forests along the Andes, from Colombia south to Peru.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive series of short, high-pitched hoots. Scan dense foliage and mid-story levels for this active hunter, which can be well-hidden.
When to spot
Primarily diurnal, active during the day, especially at dawn and dusk. Its calls can be heard throughout the day.
