The Northern Boobook is a medium-sized owl that was recently split from the widespread Brown Hawk-Owl complex. It is characterized by its plain facial disc and yellow eyes, found across Northeast Asia.

Breeds in forests and woodlands across Northeast Asia, including Japan, Korea, and parts of China and Russia. Winters in Southeast Asia.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive hooting calls. During migration, they can be found in various wooded habitats. Look for them perched in trees at dusk or dawn.

Primarily nocturnal. Best observed by listening for its calls during the breeding season at night, or during migration.
