Spotted
A highly range-restricted and endangered cotinga species endemic to the arid coastal scrub of northwestern Peru. It has a distinctive short, stout bill adapted for cutting vegetation.
Where to spot
Arid scrubland, thorny woodland, and coastal desert oases in a narrow strip of northwestern Peru.
How to spot
Look for it in dense scrub, often moving low to the ground. Its relatively dull plumage can make it hard to spot, but listen for its harsh, grating calls and observe its plant-cutting behavior.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning and late afternoon.
