A large and spectacular cotinga species found in the humid rainforests of northern South America. The male is almost entirely deep crimson, giving it a truly military-like appearance.

Humid lowland rainforests, particularly near forest edges and clearings, in northeastern Venezuela, the Guianas, and northern Brazil.
How to spot
Look in the canopy and upper mid-story of tall forests. The male's vibrant crimson plumage is unmistakable. Listen for its loud, guttural calls, which can be far-carrying.
