Spotted
The Louisiana Waterthrush is a large, stout warbler with brown upperparts, white underparts heavily streaked with brown, and a prominent white supercilium (eyebrow stripe). It constantly bobs its tail.
Where to spot
Breeds in eastern North America, particularly in the Appalachian Mountains and surrounding areas. Winters in Florida, Mexico, Central America, and northern South America.
How to spot
Search along clear, fast-flowing woodland streams and rivers. It frequently walks along the water's edge, bobbing its tail constantly. Listen for its loud, ringing song that tumbles downward.
When to spot
Best seen during breeding season (late spring to summer) along woodland streams. Spring (April-May) and fall (August-October) migration periods are also good for observation.

This species is an excellent bioindicator of stream health. Its presence often indicates clean, unpolluted streams with good riparian vegetation, as it relies on aquatic insects for food.
