Spotted
The Golden-cheeked Warbler is a small, striking warbler with a black back and crown, bright yellow cheeks, white underparts, and black streaking on its flanks.
Where to spot
Breeds only in central Texas (USA). Winters in southern Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
How to spot
Requires visiting specific Ashe Juniper-Oak woodlands in central Texas. Listen for its buzzy, somewhat complex song, often described as "bzzzz-bzzzz-lisp-twee." It forages actively in the mid-story and canopy.
When to spot
Best observed on its breeding grounds in central Texas from March to July. Observation is often limited to managed areas due to its endangered status.
This species is an endangered habitat specialist, exclusively breeding in mature Ashe Juniper (cedar) and oak woodlands, relying on the peeling bark of juniper trees for nest material.
