The Santa Catarina Screech Owl is a large screech owl endemic to the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil. It is one of the largest members of its genus in the region.

Humid Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil, particularly in the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.

Listen for its deep, hooting calls, which are quite distinctive. Scan forest edges and interior branches with a powerful spotlight for perched individuals.

Nocturnal. Best observed by its vocalizations from dusk through the night, particularly during the breeding season.
