Spotted
The Montane Forest Screech Owl is a small owl found in the Andean foothills and low montane forests of southern South America. It is often distinguished by its unique vocalizations.
Where to spot
Low to mid-elevation montane forests and Andean foothills in northwestern Argentina and southern Bolivia.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive series of short hoots, which differ from other screech owls in its range. Scan tree branches with a spotlight for roosting individuals.
When to spot
Nocturnal. Best observed by listening for its calls from dusk onwards, particularly during the breeding season.
This species was previously considered a subspecies of the widespread Tropical Screech Owl, but its distinct vocalizations and genetic differences led to its reclassification as a separate species.
