Spotted
The Choco Screech Owl is a small, recently described owl species endemic to the humid Choco bioregion of northwestern South America. It is a denizen of lowland rainforests.
Where to spot
Lowland humid rainforests and forest edges in the Choco region, primarily western Colombia and northwestern Ecuador.
How to spot
Listen for its unique, low-pitched hooting calls. Finding it visually can be particularly challenging in dense rainforest; use a spotlight to scan branches and foliage carefully.
When to spot
Nocturnal. Best observed by its calls after dusk and before dawn. Its remote and dense habitat makes visual sightings challenging.
This species was recognized as distinct from the Middle American Screech Owl due to subtle differences in plumage and unique vocalizations, highlighting the region's immense and often hidden biodiversity.
