Where to spot
Endemic to the Greater Sunda Islands (Sumatra, Borneo, Java, Bali) and some smaller islands, inhabiting various forest types.
How to spot
Listen for its short, repetitive hooting calls. Look for it perched on branches in the mid-story of the forest, often blending well with the foliage.
When to spot
Primarily diurnal, active during the day, especially at dawn and dusk. Can be vocal at night as well.
This owlet often nests in old woodpecker holes or natural tree cavities in its forest habitat, providing secure locations for raising its young.
