The Least Pygmy Owl is one of the smallest owl species in the world, found in lowland tropical forests of eastern Brazil. It is a tiny but fierce diurnal predator.
Where to spot
Lowland humid forests, especially primary and mature secondary forests, in eastern Brazil, particularly the Atlantic Forest biome.
How to spot
Listen for its short, high-pitched hooting calls. Its small size makes it very difficult to spot; look for subtle movements in the mid-story and sub-canopy of dense forest.
When to spot
Primarily diurnal, active during the day. Most vocal at dawn and dusk, when it is most easily detected.
