The Middle American Screech Owl is a small, cryptic owl found in various forested habitats across Central America. Its plumage coloration allows it to blend seamlessly with tree bark.
Where to spot
Found from southern Mexico south through Central America to northern Colombia, inhabiting humid evergreen forests, deciduous forests, and coffee plantations.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive trilling or hooting calls. During the day, carefully scan tree trunks and branches for a camouflaged roosting bird, which can be remarkably difficult to spot.
When to spot
Nocturnal. Most vocal at night, especially during the breeding season when males call to attract mates.
