Spotted
The Grey Nightjar is a widespread and highly camouflaged nightjar found across much of Asia. It is renowned for its exceptional ability to blend into its surroundings during the day, making it very difficult to spot.
Where to spot
Inhabits South, East, and Southeast Asia, including various forests, woodlands, and scrub habitats. Some populations are migratory, moving seasonally.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic calls, often a rapid 'churrr' or 'chuk-chuk-chuk.' Locating them during the day requires keen eyes and slow scanning, as they blend perfectly with their surroundings on low branches and leaf litter.
When to spot
Nocturnal, primarily active at dusk, dawn, and throughout moonlit nights. Can be observed year-round in resident areas, or seasonally in migratory regions during spring and autumn.

This species exhibits remarkable camouflage, often resting directly on tree branches or the forest floor where its plumage perfectly mimics bark or dead leaves, rendering it almost invisible.
