Spotted
The Buff-collared Nightjar is a species characterized by a noticeable buff or tawny collar on its nape, which provides effective camouflage.
Where to spot
Found from the southwestern United States (Arizona, New Mexico) south through Mexico and into Central America. It prefers arid and semi-arid scrublands, desert washes, and open woodlands.
How to spot
Listen for its unique, accelerating-then-decelerating call. Scan the ground or low perches with a spotlight at night. During the day, it is extremely well-camouflaged.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal, active from dusk to dawn, when its distinctive calls are most prominent.
Its unique call is often described as resembling a bouncing ball, with the tempo slowing down as it reaches the end of the sequence.
