Spotted
The Golden Nightjar is a strikingly beautiful nightjar named for its golden-buff and black patterned plumage. This unique coloration provides superb camouflage in its rocky desert habitats.
Where to spot
Found in Sahelian Africa, specifically in semi-desert and rocky steppe regions from Mauritania eastward to Sudan.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive vocalizations, often described as a soft 'churr.' Use a powerful spotlight during night drives to scan for its eyeshine or camouflaged form on open ground or rocky outcrops.
When to spot
Nocturnal, primarily active at dusk and dawn. Can be observed year-round in its resident range, where it remains relatively stationary.
The Golden Nightjar's vibrant, golden-brown plumage is remarkably effective camouflage, allowing it to seemingly disappear among sandy, stony desert landscapes, even under close inspection.
