Where to spot
Found primarily in Southwestern Europe and Northwestern Africa, inhabiting open woodlands, scrublands, olive groves, and heathlands. It migrates to Sub-Saharan Africa for winter.
How to spot
Look for them hawking for insects over open areas at night. During the day, they roost motionlessly on the ground or a low branch, relying on their excellent camouflage. Listen for their continuous, purring trill.
