Spotted
The Yucatan Poorwill is a small, highly camouflaged nightjar primarily endemic to the Yucatan Peninsula and its surrounding regions.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Yucatan Peninsula, including parts of Mexico, Belize, and northern Guatemala. It inhabits dry deciduous forests, scrub, and disturbed woodlands.
How to spot
Primarily detected by its distinctive, often repeated 'whip' or 'whi-oo' call. Locating it visually during the day is very challenging due to its camouflage; search for it on the ground or low branches at night with a spotlight.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal, it is most active at dusk and dawn. It spends its days roosting on the ground, relying on its camouflage.
Its plumage blends remarkably well with the dry, leaf-littered forest floor of its habitat, making it incredibly difficult to detect when motionless.
