Spotted
Jouanin's Petrel is a medium-sized, uniformly dark petrel with a wedge-shaped tail, found in the Arabian Sea and western Indian Ocean. It is a highly pelagic and nocturnal breeder.
Where to spot
Breeds on a few remote islands in the Arabian Sea, particularly the Kuria Muria Islands off Oman. Forages widely across the Arabian Sea and western Indian Ocean.
How to spot
Look for its overall dark sooty-brown plumage, wedge-shaped tail, and distinct flight pattern with deep, powerful wingbeats and long glides. Similar to Bulwer's Petrel but larger and more robust. Best observed on pelagic trips in the Arabian Sea, particularly off Oman or Yemen.
When to spot
Breeding occurs primarily during the northern summer (May-October). Can be observed at sea year-round in the Arabian Sea region, but often far offshore.
This species has an extremely long breeding season, often stretching for nine months or more, and appears to nest opportunistically in areas with sufficient rainfall for burrow stability.
