The Westland Petrel is a large, entirely dark petrel endemic to New Zealand's South Island. It is a vulnerable species that breeds in coastal forests.

Breeds in coastal forests of the South Island, New Zealand, particularly near Punakaiki on the West Coast. Forages in the Tasman Sea and Southwest Pacific.
How to spot
Identify by its large size, entirely dark sooty-brown plumage, and heavy pale bill. Its flight is powerful and direct. Best observed on pelagic trips off the West Coast of the South Island, or very rarely from land at night near colonies when they are vocal.

Breeding occurs from May to December. Can be observed at sea off New Zealand during these months, especially off the West Coast of the South Island.
