Spotted
The Jamaican Petrel is a critically endangered, possibly extinct gadfly petrel endemic to Jamaica. It is a dark, medium-sized petrel, last confirmed seen in 1879.
Where to spot
Historically bred in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica. Any potential future sightings would be extremely rare and highly localized around Jamaica.
How to spot
Identification would be based on its entirely dark plumage, relatively short tail, and distinct flight. Given its precarious status, any observation would be a monumental event requiring extensive effort and luck in its former range.
When to spot
If it still exists, observation would be highly opportunistic and incredibly rare, potentially during the breeding season (winter/spring) around Jamaica.

The disappearance of the Jamaican Petrel is largely attributed to predation by introduced mongooses and other mammals on its mountain breeding sites, serving as a cautionary tale for island ecosystems.
