Spotted
Barau's Petrel is a distinct gadfly petrel with a unique dark 'W' pattern on its upperwing, endemic to the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean. It is a nocturnal breeder.
Where to spot
Breeds in high mountains on Réunion and possibly other Mascarene Islands. Forages widely in the tropical Indian Ocean, from Madagascar to the western Pacific.
How to spot
Look for its grey upperparts, white underparts, and the diagnostic dark 'W' or 'M' pattern across its upperwing, extending to a dark cap. Its flight is fast and direct. Best seen on pelagic trips in the southwestern Indian Ocean, particularly off Réunion or Mauritius.
When to spot
Breeding season is from September to March. Can be observed at sea during these months off Réunion. Nocturnal movements make it difficult to see at colonies.

This petrel performs spectacular nocturnal 'fall-out' flights from its breeding colonies in the mountains of Réunion, where juveniles are attracted to artificial lights and can become grounded.
