Spotted
The South Georgia Diving Petrel is a small, dark-plumaged seabird inhabiting the cold waters of the Southern Ocean. Like other diving petrels, it is an expert underwater hunter, propelling itself with its wings.
Where to spot
Breeds on subantarctic islands, notably South Georgia and other islands in the Scotia Arc and Indian Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean. Disperses throughout these cold waters.
How to spot
Requires pelagic trips into the subantarctic. Look for its compact body, entirely dark upperparts (extending slightly onto the flanks), and rapid, whirring flight low over the water. Differentiation from other diving petrels requires close observation of bill and face markings.
When to spot
Breeding occurs during the austral summer (October to April). Can be seen year-round in suitable subantarctic waters, though often difficult to approach.
