Observation requires pelagic boat trips in tropical waters. Look for its characteristic flight, low over the waves with stiff wing beats and short glides. Pay attention to its size (smaller than larger shearwaters, larger than storm-petrels) and overall dark-and-white appearance. Identification to specific subspecies or recently split species can be very challenging and often relies on geographic location.

Breeding seasons vary regionally, but birds are typically at sea year-round within their respective ranges. Often seen during warm-water pelagic trips.
