Spotted
A spectacularly colored antpitta with a bright orange hood contrasting sharply with its dark body. It is a rare and highly sought-after inhabitant of humid montane cloud forests.
Where to spot
Found in disjunct populations in humid montane cloud forests of Colombia, Ecuador, and northern Peru. It prefers dense undergrowth, often near streams.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often melancholic, calls. Spotting it requires immense patience and quiet observation near known territories. It occasionally visits feeders where habituated.
When to spot
Most active and vocal during early morning, particularly at dawn. Can be found year-round in its specific high-altitude cloud forest habitat.
Its vibrant, 'hooded' appearance makes it one of the most visually stunning members of the antpitta family, a true prize for any birder lucky enough to spot it.
