Spotted
A robust antpitta with a rather dark, plain plumage, well-suited to its preferred habitat of dense forest thickets. It is a notoriously shy and difficult bird to see.
Where to spot
Found in dense, humid lowland and foothill forests from southeastern Nicaragua, through Costa Rica and Panama, into northwestern Colombia.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, resonant hooting calls, which are the primary means of detection. Spotting it requires extreme patience and quiet observation in its preferred dense undergrowth.
When to spot
Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon. Can be found year-round in its tropical forest habitat.
Its common name aptly describes its habitat preference; it rarely ventures into the open, making a visual sighting a significant challenge.
