A shy and highly terrestrial bird found in the undergrowth of Himalayan forests. It is noted for its short tail and rich brown plumage.
Where to spot
Dense undergrowth of montane and temperate forests in the Himalayas, from Nepal eastward to China.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often monotonous song. It prefers dense, damp areas, often near streams.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season when males are vocal. Active year-round.
This species was formerly considered part of the widespread Lesser Shortwing complex but has been recognized as a distinct species.
