Spotted
The Banded Ground Robin is a distinctive forest bird with a complex pattern of rufous, black, and white bands, particularly noticeable on its underparts. It is a secretive inhabitant of dense forests.
Where to spot
Found in montane forests of Central Africa, including parts of Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania. It prefers dense undergrowth.
How to spot
Patience is key. Look for its intricate banded pattern on the underparts as it moves on the forest floor or perches low. Listen for its melodious and varied song.
When to spot
A resident species, observable year-round. Most active during the cooler parts of the day, particularly early morning and late afternoon. More vocal during breeding season.
Its unique banded pattern, which provides camouflage in the dappled light of the forest floor, makes it one of the more visually striking, yet elusive, ground-dwelling robins.
