Spotted
The Sumatran Niltava is an island endemic, with males displaying deep blue and black plumage and females being more subdued brown with a rufous wash. It is found in montane rainforests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, inhabiting humid montane forests at elevations ranging from moderate to high altitudes.
How to spot
Look for the male's deep blue coloration, which can appear iridescent in good light. It typically stays within the dense foliage, making it somewhat elusive. Listen for its soft calls within the forest.
When to spot
A resident species, observable year-round. It is most active during the early morning and late afternoon hours, often foraging in the sub-canopy.
This niltava is a classic example of island endemism, having evolved distinctly on Sumatra. Its deep blue color is a result of structural coloration, where the feather structure rather than pigments creates the vibrant hue.
