Spotted
A rather drab but distinctive flycatcher, identified by its prominent rufous tail and subtle plumage. It inhabits montane forests.
Where to spot
Dense montane forests and groves, particularly coniferous forests, in the Himalayas, Central Asia, and parts of China.
How to spot
Look for it actively foraging in the mid-canopy, often perching for a moment before darting out. Note its rufous tail.
When to spot
Breeding season (summer) in northern latitudes; migratory to lower elevations or south in winter.
The rufous tail, which is often flicked or fanned, is the most obvious identifying feature of this otherwise inconspicuous bird.
