Where to spot
Dense undergrowth of subalpine and alpine forests, often near bamboo, in the Himalayas (Nepal, Bhutan, China).
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, loud whistles. It often forages in dark, damp areas. Patience is key as it is very secretive.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most vocal in the early morning, particularly during the breeding season.
