Spotted
The Hill Partridge is a beautifully marked partridge species found across the Himalayan foothills and parts of Southeast Asia. It is characterized by its intricate facial patterns and camouflaged plumage, inhabiting dense mountain forests.
Where to spot
Inhabits subtropical and temperate montane forests, bamboo thickets, and dense scrub in the Himalayan foothills (India, Nepal, Bhutan) and extends into Southeast Asia (Myanmar, China, Vietnam).
How to spot
Extremely shy and difficult to spot in its dense habitat. Listen intently for its calls, which are the best way to locate it. Look for it foraging quietly on the forest floor along forest edges or trails.
When to spot
Most vocal at dawn and dusk, when its calls can often be heard. Can be observed year-round, but vocalizations are more frequent during the breeding season.

Its loud, ringing 'ku-ku-ku-kuk' call, often given in a duet by a pair, is a characteristic sound echoing through the mountain valleys where it lives.
