The Grey Francolin is a common and widespread gamebird known for its streaky grey-brown plumage and adaptability to human-modified landscapes. It is a familiar sight and sound across its native range.
Where to spot
Widespread across the Indian subcontinent, extending into parts of the Middle East, inhabiting dry grasslands, agricultural fields, scrubland, and open country.
How to spot
Listen for their distinctive calls, which are the primary way to locate them. They are ground-dwelling and can be elusive, so scanning open fields or the edges of cover with binoculars from a distance can be effective. Look for them along field edges or paths.
When to spot
Best observed at dawn and dusk when they are most active, foraging in open areas. They may also call frequently throughout the day, especially during warmer periods.
