Spotted
The Mikado Pheasant is Taiwan's national bird, an endemic species distinguished by the male's glossy black plumage, striking white wing bars, and a long, white-barred tail.
Where to spot
Confined to dense montane forests and bamboo thickets at high elevations (1,800-3,800 meters) in central Taiwan.
How to spot
Extremely shy and elusive in its natural habitat. Focus on quiet trails within high-altitude national parks in Taiwan. Look for signs of foraging on the forest floor or listen for its soft calls. Patience is paramount.
When to spot
Year-round, primarily active during early morning and late afternoon. The breeding season (spring) can offer better chances for sightings as males are more vocal and conspicuous.
