A magnificent pheasant native to Southeast Asia, renowned for the male's enormous, intricate secondary wing feathers, which are adorned with striking ocelli (eyespots).
Where to spot
Primary and secondary evergreen forests, typically in lowland and hill areas of Borneo, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula.
How to spot
Often heard before seen. Locate active display grounds by listening for the loud, booming calls. Be still and patient, as birds may cautiously emerge. A good pair of binoculars will help appreciate their intricate plumage.
When to spot
Active during the day, particularly audible during the breeding season (February-July) when males call from their display grounds.
