Identify by the white patch at the base of the bill, the orange or pink bill itself, and the variably present black barring on the belly. Listen for its high-pitched, yelping call, often described as 'kow-lyuk'.

Best observed during autumn and spring migration, and throughout the winter in their diverse non-breeding grounds. They are less accessible on their remote Arctic breeding territories.

The 'white-front' on this goose's face becomes more pronounced with age, making it easier to identify older individuals from juveniles, which initially lack this feature.
