Spotted
The Brazilian Teal is a small, dabbling duck found widely across South America. It is known for its distinctive red bill and feet, particularly prominent in the male, and brown plumage with pale flanks.
Where to spot
Found in shallow freshwater wetlands, ponds, slow-moving rivers, and flooded grasslands throughout tropical and subtropical South America, ranging from Colombia to Argentina.
How to spot
Look for its small size and the bright red bill and feet, which are especially striking on the male. They often dabble in shallow water or graze on emergent vegetation along the banks. Females have a duller bill and a white line by the eye.
When to spot
Observable year-round. Active during the day, often seen in pairs or small family groups, dabbling for food in shallow waters.
