Spotted
The Great Rosefinch is one of the largest and most striking rosefinches, with males displaying a brilliant crimson-red plumage and a contrasting dark tail. Females are mottled brown.
Where to spot
Found across vast mountainous regions from the Caucasus and Central Asia to the Himalayas and western China. They breed in alpine meadows and rocky slopes, descending to lower forests in winter.
How to spot
In winter, look for them in valleys, cultivated areas, or near human settlements, especially where food is available. In summer, scan alpine pastures and rocky outcrops. Listen for their strong, clear calls.
When to spot
Best seen during winter months when they move to lower altitudes and are more approachable. Breeding season is summer, but they are higher up.
