Spotted
The Blue-naped Chlorophonia is a small, colorful finch known for its brilliant green plumage, yellow belly, and a distinctive blue patch on the nape of its neck. It inhabits humid montane forests.
Where to spot
Found in humid montane forests along the Andes, from northern Venezuela and Colombia, south through Ecuador and Peru, reaching into parts of Bolivia.
How to spot
Scan the canopy and sub-canopy of humid montane forests, especially near fruiting trees or mistletoe. The bright green body, yellow belly, and blue nape patch are key identifiers. Listen for its quiet, high-pitched, whistling calls.
When to spot
Resident throughout its range. Optimal observation times are early mornings when it's actively foraging for fruits in the canopy.

This species is often found in the vicinity of mistletoe plants, as its diet heavily relies on the berries of this parasitic plant, helping to disperse its seeds.
