Spotted
The Brambling is a striking finch, with breeding males featuring a glossy black head and back, contrasting vividly with a bright orange breast and white belly. It is a highly migratory species, often forming large, spectacular flocks in winter.
Where to spot
Breeds in northern Europe and Asia, particularly in birch and coniferous forests. Winters across central and southern Europe, and parts of Asia, frequently found in beech forests, cultivated fields, and open woodland.
How to spot
Look for the Brambling's distinctive orange breast and white belly, which differentiate it from the similar Common Chaffinch. Males in breeding plumage are particularly striking with their dark heads. Often seen feeding on the ground under trees or at feeders.
When to spot
Best observed during autumn and winter in its non-breeding range, when large, often mixed-species, flocks can be encountered. Present in breeding grounds during the summer months.

Bramblings are renowned irruptive migrants, meaning their wintering locations and numbers can fluctuate dramatically from year to year. These movements are often driven by the availability of beech mast, their preferred winter food source.
