Spotted
The Spot-crowned Euphonia is a small, striking finch found in humid lowland forests. Males are characterized by iridescent blue-black upperparts and bright yellow underparts, with a unique small yellow patch on the hindcrown.
Where to spot
Endemic to the humid lowlands and foothills of the Pacific slope of southwestern Costa Rica and western Panama.
How to spot
Scan the mid to upper canopy of humid forests, especially around fruiting trees. The male's glossy blue-black and yellow plumage with the small yellow crown spot are key. Listen for its high-pitched, somewhat buzzy calls.
When to spot
Resident throughout its limited range. Best observed during early morning or late afternoon when it is actively foraging for fruits in the forest canopy.

The subtle yellow spot on the crown of the male is often difficult to see unless observed closely, making it a challenging but rewarding identification feature.
