The Black-capped Siskin is a small, attractive finch found in the highlands of Central America. Males are distinguished by a prominent black cap and vibrant yellow plumage.
Where to spot
Highland evergreen forests of southern Mexico and Guatemala, preferring pine-oak and humid montane forests.
How to spot
Look for them foraging high in trees, often among cones. Listen for their typical siskin calls. The male's black cap contrasting with yellow is a clear identification feature.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active and vocal during the breeding season from spring through summer.
