Spotted
The Maui Akepa was an extinct Hawaiian honeycreeper endemic to Maui. Males were bright orange, females yellowish-green, and both had a conical, slightly crossed bill adapted for insect foraging.
Where to spot
Historically endemic to the high-elevation native forests on the eastern slopes of Haleakalā, Maui, Hawaii.
How to spot
Observation is no longer possible. Historically, it was identified by the male's distinct orange plumage or the female's yellowish-green, and its short, slightly crossed bill, typically seen foraging in 'ōhi'a canopies.
When to spot
Last observed in 1988 and is considered extinct. It is no longer observable.
This species was believed to be a specialist on caterpillars and other insects found within the buds of 'ōhi'a trees, using its unique bill to access them.
