Spotted
The Great Dusky Swift is one of the largest and darkest swifts, found in South America. It's often associated with large waterfalls and rocky gorges, where it forms colonies.
Where to spot
Widespread in South America, from southeastern Brazil south to northern Argentina. Often found in areas with large waterfalls or rocky cliffs in humid forests.
How to spot
Look for its very large size and uniformly sooty-black plumage. Its flight is powerful and direct. Observing near large waterfalls is often the best strategy to see this species entering and exiting its nesting sites.
When to spot
Typically observed during the breeding season (austral spring and summer) when colonies are active around waterfall nesting sites. Otherwise, seen foraging year-round.
