Spotted
The Philippine Spinetail is a unique swift species endemic to the Philippines, recognized by its distinctive spiny tail feathers. It is a highly agile aerial insectivore, often seen foraging over forests and open clearings.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Philippines, found mainly on the larger islands of Luzon and Mindanao. Inhabits lowland and montane forests, often foraging over clearings, forest edges, and rivers.
How to spot
Look for its relatively robust build and, if possible, the distinctive spiny tail, which differentiates it from other swiftlets. Observe its powerful, direct flight. It can be seen flying high in the sky or hawking insects closer to the canopy.
When to spot
Year-round resident, active during daylight hours, especially in the mornings and late afternoons.
Unlike most swiftlets, this species is named for its stiff, projecting tail feather shafts, which create a 'spiny' appearance and are often visible during close observation in flight.
