The Blue Bustard, also known as Blue Korhaan, is a distinctive medium-sized bustard endemic to southern Africa. It is notable for the male's striking blue-grey plumage and prefers open grasslands and agricultural areas.
Where to spot
Endemic to South Africa, Lesotho, and parts of Eswatini. It primarily inhabits open grasslands, farmlands, and fynbos, often in hilly or undulating terrain.
How to spot
Scan open grasslands and farmlands. Males are easily identified by their unique blue-grey coloration. Listen for their distinctive 'kwaak-kwaak' calls, which are often given in flight or from a prominent perch.
When to spot
A year-round resident. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon. Aerial displays are most frequent and prominent during the breeding season (southern summer, typically October to March).
