The Northern Black Bustard is a distinct bustard species found across a wide range of sub-Saharan Africa. The male exhibits striking black plumage, making it quite noticeable in its open grassland habitats.
Where to spot
Widespread across much of sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal to Ethiopia and south to Tanzania, inhabiting open grasslands, savannas, and croplands.
How to spot
Search open, grassy plains and cultivated areas. While on the ground, they can be well camouflaged. Watch for the male's distinctive black body and white wing patches during his impressive aerial courtship displays, often performed high in the sky.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, but particularly visible during the breeding season, when males perform their aerial displays. Early mornings offer good opportunities.
